Qu Yuan was a poet and statesman of the State of Chu during the Warring States period, renowned for his loyalty, patriotism, and noble character. He advocated reform and an alliance with Qi against Qin, but was repeatedly slandered by corrupt courtiers and exiled. During his banishment, he wrote masterpieces such as Li Sao, Nine Songs, and Tianwen, founding the tradition of Chu Ci poetry. After later hearing that the Chu capital had fallen, he drowned himself in the Miluo River in grief and indignation. His image symbolizes loyalty, ideals, integrity, and an unyielding spirit, and the Dragon Boat Festival has also been passed down through the ages in remembrance of him.
